Here’s the honest version of this answer, without the corporate hedging:

Most chips smaller than a quarter can be repaired. Most cracks under 6 inches can be repaired. Once you get past those thresholds, repair starts getting unreliable and replacement is usually the smarter move.

A few other things that affect it:

Location matters. A chip off to the side of the windshield, away from your direct line of sight, is a great candidate for repair. A chip right in the center of your vision zone is trickier, we can often repair it, but if there’s any risk of residual distortion affecting your vision, we’ll tell you replacement is the better call.

Age matters. A chip you noticed this morning is much more repairable than one that’s been sitting for three weeks collecting road grime. Dirt and moisture work into the break over time and make the resin fill less effective. If you’ve got a chip, don’t sit on it.

Depth matters. Your windshield is two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer between them. If the damage only hit the outer layer, we can repair it. If it went all the way through, which is uncommon but happens, you’re looking at replacement.
